Gum Disease Awareness Month: 5 Prevention Tips

Black,Woman,,Happy,In,Portrait,With,Fashion,And,Beauty,Outdoor, Gum disease, or periodontal disease, affects nearly half of all U.S. adults 30 and older. But why is it so prevalent when it’s so preventable? There are several reasons, but this month, we’re focusing on the top ways to avoid getting gingivitis or its more severe version, periodontitis.

Brush Your Teeth Every Day For the Right Amount of Time

Brushing your teeth regularly is one of the most important ways to reduce the risk of developing gum disease. Dentists generally recommend brushing twice a day with a toothpaste that contains fluoride. Each session should last at least two minutes for maximum cleaning effectiveness.

Don’t Forget to Floss

Flossing removes plaque and bacteria between the teeth, where they often get trapped and irritate the gumline. Remember that flossing is equally important as brushing when it comes to preventing gum disease. If regular dental floss irritates your gums, try a water flosser instead.

Reduce Your Sugar Intake

Sugar left on the teeth can create a breeding ground for bacteria, and avoiding sugar can reduce the danger of gum disease. Be sure to brush and rinse your mouth as soon as possible after eating or drinking anything sugary. Whenever possible, look for sugar-free or low-sugar alternatives to your favorite beverages and snacks.

Avoid Smoking

Tobacco products wreak havoc on your oral health. Not only does smoking cause the teeth to turn yellow, but it can also make it easier for bacteria to live and grow around the teeth, which can lead to gum disease. Smoking can also increase the risk of oral cancer, so quitting the habit ASAP is a great investment in your well-being.

Visit Your Dentist Regularly

At least twice a year, visit your dentist for cleanings and an exam. Catching up gum disease early can prevent ongoing pain, discomfort, and damage to your mouth. Regular check-ups that occur in intervals of six months are recommended to keep the teeth in excellent condition.
