Debunking 3 Myths Surrounding Dental X-Rays | Steven E. Holbrook, DMD | Albuquerque, NMJust like with anything that is circulating the internet, there are a variety of myths surrounding dental x-rays that you may fall victim of. To make sure that you remain an informed patient, we have created an article debunking three of these common myths. From dental x-rays causing brain cancer to them being more harmful than good, this article will help you to feel more informed before going into your next dental x-ray. Read on to learn more.

Myth #1: Dental X-rays Cause Brain Cancer

Because dental x-rays are so close to the head, there’s a common myth that they can cause brain cancer or at least increase your risk of developing it. However, because the amount of radiation that is being used in a dental x-ray is so small, it isn’t going to cause any form of cancer— even if it’s exceptionally close to your brain.

Myth #2: You Can’t Get A Dental X-ray While Pregnant

Although many pregnant women choose to forego their bi-annual dental cleanings while pregnant because of an increased blood flow, getting a dental x-ray isn’t going to cause any harm to you or your baby. In fact, the amount of radiation in a dental X-ray is so small; you are probably already exposing yourself to an equal amount just by hanging around your house.

Myth #3: Dental X-rays Cause More Harm Than Good

The term “radiation” gets a bad rap— especially in regards to your oral health. Dental x-rays are an extremely valuable tool that can detect things like tumors, bone loss, abscesses, and more that just can’t be detected by a physical examination alone. In fact, it’s more than fair to say that dental x-rays cause more good than harm.

You can go into your next dental x-ray with relaxation and ease now that we have debunked some of these myths. If you would like to learn more about dental x-rays or schedule your next cleaning or appointment, contact Dr. Steven Holbrook’s office today!
