Because dental x-rays are so close to the head, there’s a common myth that they can cause brain cancer or at least increase your risk of developing it. However, because the amount of radiation that is being used in a dental x-ray is so small, it isn’t going to cause any form of cancer— even if it’s exceptionally close to your brain.
Myth #2: You Can’t Get A Dental X-ray While Pregnant
Although many pregnant women choose to forego their bi-annual dental cleanings while pregnant because of an increased blood flow, getting a dental x-ray isn’t going to cause any harm to you or your baby. In fact, the amount of radiation in a dental X-ray is so small; you are probably already exposing yourself to an equal amount just by hanging around your house.
Myth #3: Dental X-rays Cause More Harm Than Good
The term “radiation” gets a bad rap— especially in regards to your oral health. Dental x-rays are an extremely valuable tool that can detect things like tumors, bone loss, abscesses, and more that just can’t be detected by a physical examination alone.
