A partial denture is a reliable way of replacing one or more teeth within the smile. It is also an economical solution for many of our patients in the Albuquerque, NM area. Dr. Steven Holbrook has over three decades of experience in providing comprehensive dental care, and encourages patients who are faced with tooth loss to consider partial dentures as an option.

While partial dentures are beneficial in many ways, patients may have concerns about their care and management. Dr. Steven Holbrook discusses some of the common issues seen with partial dentures and how they can be resolved:

• Damage/breakage. Partial dentures can be fragile, and if they are dropped or handled too roughly, it can cause bending or damage to the metal framework or the replacement teeth. It is essential that patients do not perform DIY denture repair as even more damage can occur. Instead, patients need to phone their dental office and have their denture repaired and readjusted by a professional.

• Metal allergies. In some cases, patients who have metal allergies may have a reaction to the partial denture, due to its fabrication with metal and acrylic parts. If patients have an allergy to metal, they may experience a burning sensation, swollen gums, or numbness in the mouth while wearing their partial denture. Patients in this situation should speak to their dentist about alternative options.

• Denture slippage. While new dentures can take some time to get used to, continued slippage of the denture may require adjustments to be made. Sometimes the metal framework or the clasps do not fit as tight as they should to maintain their placement. Adjustments can also happen over time as the remaining teeth shift, the gum tissues recede, and the bone of the jaw changes.
