Is there a Right Way to Pick Your Toothbrush and Toothpaste?

Dental Disease Prevention Albuquerque NM Having clean teeth is fairly simple, right? It starts with a  good toothbrush and toothpaste and is usually followed up by bi-annual dental cleanings. And although those three things are crucial for good oral health, do you really know how to choose a good toothbrush and toothpaste? As simple as it may sound, there are actually some tips that we have for you to help you get the most out of your everyday oral care.

Your Toothbrush

When you walk down the toothbrush aisle at the grocery store or pharmacy, it may seem overwhelming with all of the options that are available. Soft, medium, or hard? Flex tip or regular? Affordable or pricey? Name brand or generic? The main things that you want to look for in a toothbrush are usually one that is large enough to scrub your teeth and that has soft bristles. Although some patients may prefer medium strength bristles, soft bristles are usually the best bet because they will clean your teeth without eroding away at the enamel.

Your Toothpaste

All toothpaste are created equal, right? Unfortunately (and fortunately) that is not the case. When you’re shopping for a toothpaste, the number one thing you want as an adult or for your kids is fluoride toothpaste. So, what is fluoride? Fluoride is the number one natural way to protect your teeth from cavities and although it’s present in most tap water, using it in your toothpaste adds an extra layer of protection for your teeth. Another thing to look for? Toothpaste that contains hydrogen peroxide which can whiten them.

Choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste doesn’t have to be difficult, but there are ways to make sure that they are more effective.
