Same-Day Implants vs. Traditional Implants: What’s Different?

Latino man is happy with his improved teeth and smile after dental implant surgery. When replacing a missing tooth, dental implants are often considered the most reliable and natural-looking option. However, many patients are surprised to learn there isn’t just one type of implant timeline. Depending on your oral health and treatment goals, your dentist may recommend either a traditional dental implant or a same-day implant approach. Both methods use the same proven implant technology but differ in how the procedure is scheduled and completed.

At his Albuquerque practice, Dr. Steven Holbrook offers both treatment options and works closely with each patient to determine which approach provides the safest and most predictable outcome.

How Traditional Dental Implants Work

Traditional implants follow a staged treatment process. After the implant post is placed into the jawbone, the area is allowed to heal for several months. During this time, the bone gradually fuses with the implant through a process called osseointegration. This step creates a stable foundation for the final restoration.

Once healing is complete, a custom crown is attached to the implant. This timeline allows the bone and surrounding tissue to integrate fully before the final tooth is placed. For many patients, this gradual approach offers a predictable and reliable path to restoring a missing tooth.

How Same-Day Implants Work

Same-day implants, sometimes called immediate implants, allow the implant post to be placed at the same appointment as a tooth extraction in certain situations. In many cases, a temporary crown may also be placed on the implant during the same visit.

This approach reduces the number of appointments required and can shorten the overall treatment timeline. However, the implant still needs time to fully integrate with the bone before the permanent crown is placed.

Which Option Is Right for You?

Both traditional and same-day implants can provide excellent results. The best choice depends on several factors, including bone density, gum health, and the condition of the tooth being replaced. Some patients benefit from immediate placement, while others may achieve better outcomes with a staged treatment plan.

During your consultation, Dr. Holbrook carefully evaluates these factors and discusses all available options so you can make an informed decision about your care.
